I am a software developer living in Brighton in the UK. I go by davegurnell on Twitter and most other social media.
Work
I am a partner at Underscore, a specialist Scala consultancy, where I develop awesome applications and train others to do the same.
I have co-authored four programming books, given countless conference talks, and sat on the program committee for the UK’s most prominent Scala conference.
In addition to Scala, I do a lot of front-end development, design and UX, and devops. I also dabble in data science and machine learning.
Projects
I am the lead developer of Cartographer, a SaaS web application for gathering and managing environmental field data.
Social
I boulder, play video games, and tinker with pianos and synthesizers. Here is some of my previous musical work.
I volunteer regularly at Codebar, an initiative to help diversify the tech community through regular coding workshops. I also help organize Functional Brighton, a monthly functional programming meetup.
I work out of The Skiff, the best co-working space in the seven seas.
Other stuff
I have a degree in Physics from the University of Warwick and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Birmingham.
